Before your first Feldenkrais lesson

My conversations  about what is that I do for living have some similarities; one being they happen just  before your first Feldenkrais lesson.

I tell a story of how I`m a movement educator and help people find ways to move without pain and stiffness; become more fluid and intelligent; acquire some understanding of efficient movements. That I`m an expert that knows how to  create safe conditions for my students to engage in first hand movement explorations.

I`m a Feldenkrais practitioner and my job is to help you learn how to move without pain, to help you recover after injury, to help you master your skills, to help you age gracefully and to help you navigate better situations involving complex neurological illnesses and injuries.

I often speak of the life  story of Dr. M. Feldenkrais who had unusually rich life experience and many fruitful relations as scientist, advanced martial artist, philosopher, thinker and researcher. It is easy to talk about Dr. Feldenkrais as he was one of those personalities that are so rich and that makes it possible for us to relate in one way or another. I`m fascinated by the idea that, if we ourselves cultivate rich enough and vibrant personalities,it will become easier for us to relate to everyone else, don`t you think?

What I find exceptional is that M. Feldenkrais  developed some very efficient practices, ideas and learning processes, related to:

Learning how to move with the help of gravity instead against it.

The effects of such skilfulness and knowledge are more strength with less effort, precision and immensely bigger range of motion that helps to keep the joints and muscles at their best.

At this point the person I`m talking to often makes personal account and reflects on some:

Sensations, Feelings or Ideas

related to their very own movement experience a bit of stiffness here, condition that was diagnosed or feeling of some kind. More often the reported sensations are about muscle tightness/weakness and joint constrains and pain. Sometimes those sensations are accompanied by a diagnosis that shows relatively fixed bone misalignment.

Interestingly enough, I have not spoken to one yet, who would come and report a sensation of bone misalignment and will have clear and complete image of his skeleton in action. That is where a question of interest comes to one`s mind:

Can we sense with our bones?

It appears that  the ability  to sense with   the bones and apply motor control based on creating sensory web of bones in action, is a more accurate proprioception skill  and it can

Frees the muscles and the  joints* for action


The Feldenkrais method® can assist you in becoming more skilful in sensing your bones while moving and using the bony skeleton to play with the gravity. The muscles become stronger and the joints function much better with the good support of your skeleton. In fact for millennia humans have used bones as talismans for strength, agility and ability to face change. Remains of Neolithic sites tell us about the tradition to bury bones from the ancestors to evoke those characteristics to a place such as home, stone circle or barrow.

Then back to present,  we talk about the possible ways for you to engage in a process developing your potential to sense much more accurately  your bones. I come with a plan to help you develop motor control based on those sensations. I make sure that you understand that what I have to offer is a process much like the process you got involved in when you first learned to walk and the results are for you to keep unlike those offered by adjustment modalities, where you have to discuss the same problem again and again. Usually one can experience discernible change after just a number of classes. I talk about how you will learn more,through your practice with me, about the incredible participation of your  nervous system in this process.

And all this happens even before the first Feldenkrais class takes place…..
